Actress Are In Top This Year
The winds of change are sweeping Tollywood. The once hero-centric industry is now leaning heavily on its heroines to woo the audiences. Film-besotted folks of Andhra, who make a ritual trip to the theatre on every festival, are not complaining either. Viewers have been singing
paens of Anushka’s performance in Arundhati since Sankranti, and tapping the trend, producers have lined up three heroine-centric films for Ugadi – the Telugu New Year this time around.
This is in total contrast to earlier Ugadi releases which banked heavily on the male superstars. Last year, the Ugadi winner was Pawan Kalyan’s Jalsa that raked in more than Rs 30 crore gross in the first two weeks itself, and in 2007, Venkatesh’s film Aadavari Matalaku Arhdhale Verule raked in Rs 25 crore.
This year, for a change, there are no heroes in the fray and even those paired opposite the top three heroines are newcomers. So, a triangular cat- fight is very much on the cards this summer. Charmmee’s romantic thriller
Manorama, Trisha’s bilingual film Akasamantha that explores the father-daughter relationship and Tamannah’s Ananda Thandavam (a Tamil film dubbed in Telugu), will contend with each other at the Box Office. Only time will tell which of these three divas will steal the show. Telugu Film News
Meanwhile, Ugadi is also a time for reading the panchangam i.e. foretelling the future of the industry. According to trade pundits, the Telugu cinema industry is in a bad shape now, but the situation is likely to improve with these film releases. Producer Suresh Babu says that the industry “needs a few hits and that’s going to happen in the coming few months with some big films ready to hit the screens. Tammareddy Bharadwaj, president Telugu Film Producer’s Council predicts, “From Ugadi onwards there’s a big line-up of films of all kinds. We feel there will be business of around Rs 100 crore.”
Suresh Babu too agrees that the “present scenario will change”. The encouraging signs are that superstar Ravi Teja has several films on hand and Mahesh Babu is all set to start his new film next month. And by the looks of it, projects with female superstars in the lead is a trend that’s likely to continue. “Arundhati has inspired producers and directors to come up with innovative subjects. I am sure in the coming few months, there will be many more female-oriented films,” said KS Rama Rao, president AP Film Chamber of Commerce.
Well, that’s a possibility, given that Anushka is leading the brigade with at least a handful of films and actresses Ileana, Trisha, Charmmee, Tamannah, Nayantara, Kajal also have plenty on their platter.
