Review

Story

Mahesh (Tanish) is the responsible son of a middle class retired father (Kasi Vishwanath). He joins in Kapil Chit Funds as collection agent to add something to his father’s pension. As his employer (Brahmanandam) asks him to possess a bike to work in his company, his mother (Thulasi) gifts him one on loan. Telugu Movie Reviews

On the other hand Arjun (Nani) is the son of an employee (Ahuthi Prasad) who believes more in savings than fulfilling the bike-desire of his son. Arjun is so passionate about bike that he finds no meaning in life without that. He studies in collage and dreams about possessing a bike every day.

Once, Mahesh loses his bike and finds that with Arjun. The tug starts from then. Has Arjun stolen Mahesh’s bike? Finally how that bike changes the lives of these two youngsters? That forms rest of the story.

Rani (Swetha) is the lady beside Mahesh and Pooja (Aksha) s the girl for Arjun.

Artists Performance:

Nani is at his best. He is setting a trade mark for himself with unique voice and modulation of dialogues. But at times, he is brining in monotony of expression carrying his Asta Chemma flavor. He should be conscious at that point. He proves to be a good suit for mass oriented roles.

Tanish is still tender in looks. He needs to add roughness to fit into the action oriented bill. But he is perfect fit for the role he portrayed in this film. He has to work on dialogue modulation.

Aksha is for glamour while Shwetha is with performance plus glamour. Like ‘e…p..u..d..u’, ‘e….k..a..d..a’ modulation in KBL, here she was give the mannerism ‘Ori Nayano..’. But that proved superfluous in some scenes.

Kasi Vishwanth has slimmed down and now looking better than that of in Nachavule. Ahuthi Prasad has little to portray. Comedy would have worked on him to add value for his presence. Others are ok.

Brahmanandam-Praveen combination as bava-bavamaridi brought many laughs in theaters. Praveen seems to be promising artiste for subtle humor and comedy for many film makers these days.

Coming to technical aspects, Hema Chandra’s music is good and RR is also done well. Dialogues and direction is also up to the requirement.

Final Analysis:

As said above, it’s a concept that appeals to the age group of 13-19. The sentiment that surrounds a bike may not appeal for matured audiences. It’s a clear cut action-sentiment drama knitted around a two-wheeler.

First half of the movie is with good pace while second half pervaded with action episodes and chasing sequences. The climax is a bit lengthy but there is little scope to make it short.

‘Dhanchave menaththa koothura…’ remix on Nani and Aksha is canned in a perfect masala way.

Navadeep’s appearance in guest role in climax is a bit interesting. On a whole, the movie has followed the formula of a youthful masala entertainer.

Pawan Kalyan Two Films This Year

Sequels Season In Tollywood

Who says only the likes of Spiderman, Harry Potter or Munna Bhai are allowed to have one adventure after the other. With sequel fever hitting Tollywood, mana heroes too are geared up to entertain audiences with their escapades all over again. While Allu Arjun’s Arya 2, Krishnudu’s Village Lo Vinayakudu, Gaayam 2 starring Jagapathi Babu and Aditya 369 are being shot currently, Diary, touted as a sequel to Charmee’s Mantra has already hit the theatres. Blame it on lack of original scripts or the desire to cash in on the previous movies’ success, sequels have become the flavour of Tollywood now. Tollywood Movie News

Sharath Kumar, senior film critic and member of Film Censor Board says, “Since the director of a hit movie has already captured the pulse of the audience, he plans the sequel in a hope to repeat that Box Office magic. When it is a new film, the director has to think of different ways to draw the audience to the theatres. Whereas, it’s not hard for the sequel of a hit movie to attract the crowds.”

Some film makers who are making sequels, are insisting on casting the same stars, even though they are undertaking this project years after the first film’s release. Praveen Sri, director of Gaayam 2 says, “The sequel will be directed in such a way that even youngsters who couldn’t watch Gaayam 15 years ago can easily understand the story. We are planning to cast the same team of actors in the film even though they may have aged considerably, to retain the authenticity. This sequel takes off from where Gaayam ends.”

Most of all, bringing out a sequel makes commercial sense, feel filmmakers. Mahi, the CEO of Moonwater Pictures, which is producing Village Lo Vinkayakudu, says, “Since a brand is already established with the first film, we feel it is safe to use the tried and tested formula again. With a huge number of people having watched the first movie, we are sure they will come back to watch the sequel.”

What’s more, the makers of Village lo Vinayakudu hope to break a popular Tollywood superstition by bringing out the sequel. “Usually, there is a belief in the industry that most directors’ second movie flops. As the Vinayakudu sequel will be the second movie for our director, we wanted to break the jinx by repeating the success formula,” he quips.

But going by the bad track record of previous sequels in Tollywood, success is not always guaranteed. In fact, Money Money and Shankardada Zindabad were big duds at the Box Office.

Aditya, a director opines, “I wanted to do a sequel of Shankarabharanam. But since all the sequels in Tollywood were a flop, I’m giving the idea a miss. Sequels may be very successful in Hollywood and Bollywood, but the Telugu audiences are different. In fact, because filmmakers fail to live up to the expectations of the first super hit film, the idea often backfires.”

'Ready' Remake In Kannada

Ready, the blockbuster movie directed by Sreenu, is all set to be remade in Kannada. Ram and Genelia, who had done the lead roles, will be replaced in Kannada by Puneeth Rajkumar and Priyamani. How are you enjoying the success of ‘Mallana’ Audio?

First of all I would like to thank all our media friends for dropping by. Yeah, the Audio’s been a huge hit and I am very happy. I’ve been getting a lot of calls of late congratulating me for the wonderful score and the feeling is just great. The album, which was released, was a roaring success and we are seeing similar response in Telugu too. So we are sort of double happy. So once again, I would like to thank our producer Thanu, Director Susi Ganesan, Hero Vikram, our cameraman Ekambaram for his brilliant picturization of the songs and all our musicians, singers and technicians.
Tell us the story behind Vikram lending his voice to the songs and the highlights?

The biggest asset of the audio is definitely the voice of Vikram. If the hero of the film needs to sing, it will generally be a single song but in the case of our film all the songs have been sung by Vikram. This is another first for our film. But all that credit goes to the director who actually suggested me to consider the option as he was impressed by Vikram’s voice in a personally recorded CD. Me being experimental by nature was very excited and told him that we will go ahead if the voice suits though I was a bit hesitant about how Vikram will take it if it doesn’t suit. But director Susi Ganesan reassured me and thus we approached Vikram. I should admit that I was very impressed with his down to earth behavior when he left aside his superstar status and told me its okay Devi, go ahead with the recording only if u think my voice fits in, else I have no issues’. So we proceeded with the recording of the song and frankly I was spellbound at his mastery. In fact so impressed was I that I suddenly wanted Vikram to sing all the songs in the film. Next is the song “excuse me Mr. Mallana”. The beauty of this song is that it is basically a mix of lyrics and dialogues and we wanted it to look very natural. So Vikram became the obvious choice as there wouldn’t be any changeover of voices between the song and the dialogues. The fact that Suchitra, who dubbed for Shriya, was the female singer of the song gave it a really good feel. The effortless ease with which the alternations between the song and dialogue take place gave it a real natural feel. The style basically resembles Hollywood musicals. Though Bhanumathi, P.V. Chinnappa, Thiyagaraja Bhagavathar and Chandrababu used to sing their songs themselves, the style is almost non-existent these days. So we thought this experiment would definitely be appreciated by the audience and went ahead. What we thought is why not let Vikram sing this song as well as the entire project would then become a nice Hero’s album and that’s how all the songs in the film happened.

Tell us about the singers and the recording?

The director wanted to have a remix as a situation in the film demands it. But I felt that remixes are quite common and told the director why not experiment around a bit and suggested him the idea of making a new song that includes in between, lines from an old song. Susi Ganesan liked the idea very much and encouraged me to go ahead. The main advantage of this is that whilst one cannot show the original footage from the film before it’s actual release, the promotional song enables one to do so. Susi Ganesan has got a great taste when it comes to music as he tries to present different episodes of a film be it action or romance in a musical way. So much so, that ‘Mallana’ can even be called a total musical. I had this idea of a promotional since a long time and as the director too was also very keen on this, we went ahead with the experiment. So that how the promotional happened.

Mahesh Babu Is A Perfectionist - Manjula

She belongs to one the most illustrious film families of Tollywood. With veteran actor Krishna for a father and current Tollywood heartthrob Mahesh Babu for a brother, it could have been easy for Manjula Swaroop to be overshadowed by their success. Yet, she has carved a niche for herself in the male dominated Telugu film industry. While her debut film Show bagged two national awards, Pokiri which was produced by her raked in more than Rs 60 crore and became the biggest hit of the year. Telugu Movie News

Manjula who has been producing films for six years has yet another unconventional film lined up — Kavya’s diary. The film has Charmee in the lead, and deals with the hardships of a working woman in an urban setting. But will a woman-oriented film work, especially since Tollywood has so far been dominated by hero-centric films? “Five years ago when I did Show, the Telugu audience was not ready for women-oriented movies. But more recently we’ve had films like Anasuya, Mantra and Arundati which did well at the box office,” Manjula says. The Telugu audience, she says, is probably ready for female oriented movies.

While Manjula has numerous hits to her credit, she feels that flops like Nani have helped her stay grounded. The sociology graduate now plans to remake James Bond with her brother in the lead.

While she is open to acting, she chooses parallel cinema to showcase her talent. However, when it comes to producing films, Manjula prefers to play it safe. “The audience here prefer entertainment. They can’t accept films where the hero is killed. They need a good potboiler. Even when Tamil films are remade in Telugu, the climax is altered to suit the audience taste,” she adds.

While it is common to see star sons turn actors in Tollywood, it is always different for the daughters. “In our society, daughters are more sheltered. Although I was offered lead roles, I had to turn them down due to objections from my father’s fans,” she reveals. Manjula who wanted to be a part of the film industry since the age of 15 was furious when she was told that fans looked upon her as a sister. “They didn’t want to see me in commercial cinema. We have to respect the audience’s sentiments, I guess,” she says adding that in retrospect she wouldn’t have been comfortable with acting in commercial films either.

Manjula, who has produced several films for her brother confesses that it is not an easy task. “When I am working with Mahesh, I have to be on my toes. He is a perfectionist. I discuss every story with him. When I am working with him, I just can’t relax,” she says.

Non-Corporation In Tollywood!

In the last couple of years, corporate houses have virtually taken over Bollywood, signing big stars on mouth-watering package deals catapulting Hindi film
production into a new zone. Telugu Movie News

Later, they gravitated towards Kollywood and made a couple of star-studded films
. However, in Tollywood, barring Mahesh Babu, corporate giants haven’t really been able to rope in happening stars. For quite some time, corporate bosses had been in talks with A-line actors here but seemed to have failed to clinch deals on paper. Pray, why is that so?
Actor Nagarjuna confirmed to Hyd Times that he has been approached by corporate houses. “I’ve had a few rounds of discussions with a leading corporate house but nothing came of it,” said the actor, but he doesn’t completely rule out that option. “I am willing to sign a film for a corporate house but only on my terms,” he says emphatically.

A few years ago, Mahesh Babu took the initiative and signed a three-film deal with a Mumbai-based corporate house. Their much-hyped film Athidi was launched with much fanfare and released to great openings but bombed. Now the company will be completing their deal by doing two more films — reportedly one with Mahesh in the lead and another one without Mahesh, in due course of time. Telugu Actress Photos

According to a corporate house honcho, the main reason for them not being able to clinch a deal is because “Telugu stars are demanding unreasonable pay packets. Even top actresses and directors have jacked up their remunerations to make the scenario worse. In this time of recession, we need to sign deals that would be beneficial to both the parties,” he says.
Unmindful of recession, another Mumbai-based house has started shooting Saleem with Vishnu and Ileana in the lead. The company is producing films in nine Indian languages. “In all the languages, we are promoting films with a good storyline,” says Mahesh Ramanathan, COO, of the company.

On not being able to lure in Tollywood stars for package deals, he says, “Unlike others, we haven’t signed Bollywood stars on package deals, so why should we change our policy for Tollywood?” Despite sounding old-fashioned, he believes that “story remains the star of a film” and accordingly, his production house will back “novel themes”.
Summing up the scenario, actor Venkatesh claims that he would make films with corporate houses, provided they promote ‘good cinema’ and are not here for making a fast buck. “If these corporate houses have only business interests in mind, then I would prefer a regular producer with whom I share a perfect wavelength,” he reasons. All said and done, he is willing to offer them dates ‘immediately’ if they come with an ‘exciting’ script.

Likewise, filmmaker Puri Jagannath, also discloses his apprehensions. “The corporates insist on a bound script and we are supposed to stick to it. Since I love to improvise even on the sets, I would prefer a regular producer,” he says.

With apprehensions on both sides, looks like it will still take some time for corporate house to penetrate Tollywood.

Director Susi Ganesan says the film’s storyline demanded a big budget. “In fact, we have not splurged just for the sake of it. We have spent where it is really necessary. But costumes in the film will be a highlight,” says the director.

“Vikram, playing a superhero in the flick, wears clothes worth Rs 75 lakh alone, while Shriya, whose glamour and acting will be a highlight in the movie, wears clothes worth a whopping Rs 1.25 crore,” he explains, putting the movies budget at over Rs 30 crore. “We wanted to shoot in new locations and toured and shot for a month in Mexico.

We spent Rs 8 crores for shooting there, while some scenes and a song, shot in Itlay, cost us Rs 2 crore. Apart from these, being a superhero action adventure, the film has a lot of special effects. These have itself cost us Rs 3 crores,” says the director. ‘Mallana’, produced by Kalaipuli S Thanu, has music by Devi Sri Prasad and is likely to be a June end release.

'Kavya's Diary' On June 5th
