This Sankranti No Star Wars

Although this time of the year is for Tollywood to shake the Box Office, it seems that like the New Year, Sankranti too is going to be a low-key affair, going by the fact that there are no big star releases this year.

Quite a surprise, given that Sankaranti is considered the most auspicious festival in these parts and the stars have always vied with one another for a release this time of the year. With no star wars, looks like the festival will lack its characteristic zing. What's even more surprising is that this year, of the six films
lined up for a Sankaranti release, only three finally made it. The biggie among them is Maska, starring Ram, Hansika and Sheela. The other two being Allari Naresh's Fitting Master and Anushka's Arundhathi.
"Filmmakers have always cashed in on the festival," says producer council chairman, Tammareddy Bharadwaj.

Yesteryear stars too played a key role in creating this trend, says Tammareddy, as he goes on to explain, "NTR always opted for a December release, while ANR preferred Sankranti. Later, Krishna joined the Sankranti bandwagon. Even I believe there's something auspicious about this festival. My film Pachani Samsaram with Krishna in the lead actor which released on Sankranti was a blockbuster. It was not only a commercial hit but also won accolades for me as a director."

Another sentiment that's attached to this festival is that since it's the first festival in the year, filmmakers want to come up with a blockbuster and hope that the good fortune sustains till the end of the year. MS Raju, who is popularly known as Sankranthi Raju, is ready with Maska this time. "I am confident about my film and I have always had the Sankranti sentiment," he said. Most of his films that were released on this particular day were hits, the most memorable being the Mahesh Babu starrer Okkadu.
Vouching for the Sankranti effect is director EVV Satyanarayana, "I got my first break with Prema Khaidi, which was a Sankranti release, and I firmly believe that there's something auspicious about the festival." No wonder, he is releasing his film Fitting Master at this time, with son Naresh playing the lead role.

The surprise this year is Arundh-athi. And we wonder if this is the beginning of a new trend considering the theme is women-centric. Arundhati took almost two years in the making because of the graphic element and other technical work and also because Anushka, the glam girl of Telugu cinema, dons a new avatar in this period flick, directed by Kodi Rama Krishna.

Coming to the films that were postponed –– Siddharth's Konchem Ishtam Konchem Kashtam, the Nitin and Priyamani starrer Drona and Rajasekhar's Satyameva Jayathe –– we hear that they will be released by the end of the month. Apart from these, according to industry sources, there are some more films lined up for release next month, that's before the exam fever takes a grip in March. An estimated Rs 80 to 100 crore business is expected in the first two months.

Nayan's 2-Piece Bikini On Telugu Screen

The heading entices many but we are missing that now. Nayantara is supposed to pose in bikini for NTR-VV Vinayak's film as per a grapevine but she requested Vinayak to make some changes and avoid that. Vinayak instantly agreed to her as he is no way in idea to trouble her feelings. Although the scene required her to wear that, Vinayak decided to delete that scene from the script, says Nayantara.

Nayantara made a big surge in cinema world with her bikini act in the film Billa with Ajith. And she said that she is no way willing to act in Bikini again as she feels that is not a compulsory aspect to turn the heads of people.

Now the shooting of her film with NTR is going on in brisk pace and recently a song was shot in Ramoji Film City. Nayan is being paid huge amount for her role in this film but still Vinayak is not taking any liberties with her like that of bikini acts.

Tamanna To Take First Posion In Telugu Actress In 2009

Industry pundits have predicted that Tamannaah is going to be the person to watch out for in 2009.
She has everything going her way — the right looks and attitude, is a complete professional, disciplined and above all, she has made the right choice of films. All her forthcoming films are with young heroes —Surya (Ayan), Dhanush (Padikathavan), Bharath (Raja Rani), Karthi (Paiyya) and Siddharth (Ananda Thandavam) and a big Telugu film with Boys Siddharth (Koncham Ishtam Koncham Kashtam).

During the last year, she had no releases, but things seem to be looking up for the actress as she will have more films than her rivals. Suddenly, Tammu, as she is affectionately called by her friends and folks, has become hot property in the south Indian advertising endorsement market, after Asin took the aerial route to Mumbai. At the moment, the 19-year-old from Lokhandwala in Andheri, Mumbai, is the highest paid actress in Tamil cinema, without a single hit to her credit!

When asked about her phenomenal rise in Kollywood, without any releases in 2008, Tamannaah says, “Two of my 2007 December releases —Shekhar Kammula’s Happy Days in Telugu and Balaji Sakthivel’s Kalloori in Tamil, were path breaking films that received critical acclaim. Both were performance-oriented roles and the audience loved my characters. I am eternally grateful to Sekhar sir and Balaji sir, two people who moulded me as an actress.”

How has she managed so many films that are coming up for release this year? The actress says, “At least two of them, Ananda Thandavam and Padikkathavan, were due for release last year, but were delayed because of technical reasons.” So, this year she will have six releases spread over eight months.

On her choice of films, Tamannaah is very clear. “What counts is the script, director, hero and the banner. The director should be able to give me a good narration of the script and a good role. The story of Lingusamy’s Paiyya was narrated to me in three hours. If I am attracted to the story, I try to squeeze my dates for the film.” About doing too many love stories, she replies, “Ayan is an action film and Padikathavan is a rip-roaring comedy. I try my best to do all genres of movies.” She says that it’s her aim to dub in her own voice by the end of the year. “I’m trying to learn the language and also picking up many words when on the sets where everybody talks in Tamil. In fact, I heard the entire script narration of Paiyya in Tamil,” says the actress, who is a keen observer.

About the talk that she is charging a bomb, without actually having a hit, she says, “In this industry, you get what you deserve. It is all a question of demand and my producers feel I’m worth it. If not, they will not pay me so much.” The fringe benefit of stardom, according to her, is travel. “Last year, I went to the US, Switzerland, South Africa, Malaysia, Singapore and Namibia,” she says.

On why she avoids parties and has no link-ups, Tammu says, “I work 24X7 trying to finish my films, and I love to read and browse the Internet during my free time. As far as love is concerned, I’m yet to meet the right guy. Love is unpredictable and can happen to anybody anytime.”

The young star is very religious and visits temples (her favourite being Vaishnodevi) and believes in numerology.
Her luck changed after she added an extra ‘a’ and ‘n’ to her name. Her most prized possession, at the moment, is her ultra-thin Apple-MacBook which she got as a gift from her brother on her 19th birthday.

2009 is going to be a momentous year for Tammu and if all goes well, she may become the new ‘numero uno’ in Kollywood.

Indumathi Movie Review

Movie: Indumathi
My Rating: 2.5/5
Banner: Geomedia Arts
Music: Anand (Mantra fame)
Cinematography: Vasu
Editing: Shankar
Screenplay - Story & Direction: Harsha P Reddy
Producer: Harsha P Reddy
Cast: Shweta Bharadwaj, Sivaji, Vennela Kishore, Harsha Vardhan, Vijay Sai, Harsha, Srinivasa Reddy, Giri Babu, Ravi Prakash, Melkote etc
Release Date: 1st Jan 2009

My Review

Story

A girl (Shweta Bharadwaj) steals a couple of crores from her boss in Vizag and runs away with her boyfriend to Hyderabad. There she rents Ananda Nilayam in Gachibowli. She goes missing and her boyfriend is killed. A group of friends (Vennela Kishore, Vijay Sai and Satyam Rajesh) rent out the same place the next day. And they are visited by a psychopath (Sivaji) the next day. The rest of the story is all about who the psychopath is and what happens to the girl and the friends’ gang.

Artists Performance:

Sivaji did the role of psychopath and he excels with good antics. His dialogues told in Telangana slang are entertaining. Vennela Kishore (Khadir from Vennela) impresses again in this film. His own dubbing (dubbing for Vennela was done by Uttej) in this film is good. He has got good comedy timing. He has the ability to do serious roles as well. Vijay Sai is another guy who seems to have become a definite actor in thriller films. His comedy is pretty good. Shweta Bharadwaj fits the bill and she did a hot scene in this film. But the real hero of the film is Harsha Vardhan (Amrutam fame). His body language in this film is pretty close to that of Vince Vaughn who played Norman Bates character in Psycho (1998). Harsha (TV9 crime watch guy) did the role of private detective. Srinivasa Reddy did a small role and he provides comedy.

Technical Departments:

Story of the film is inspired by Alfred Hitchcock’s classic thriller Psycho (1960). The character of Sivaji is added to mislead the audiences and at the same time to provide the entertainment. At the same time, heroine character is not killed to show her as one of the suspects. The investigator character in Psycho is split into two characters in the film. Since it is taboo to show mother in a bad way in Telugu films, the director added a brother character to create a new premise for the death of psycho’s family members.

Screenplay – Direction:

Screenplay of the film is little confusing. The original film Psycho is told in a linear format with the vital twist in the climax. For Indumathi, the director narrated it with a flashback format with time stamp. For a first timer, Harsha P Reddy does a decent job. He succeeded in creating humor and suspense element. But he did not narrate the story in a clear way. Though completely irrelevant to the story, he managed to hold most of the second half with the single episode of Sivaji portraying as a psychopath. But, he should have avoided a couple of bad scenes like gay comedy at the beginning and prostitute episode.

Other Departments:

The only song in the film is good. The background score by Anand (Mantra fame) is worth commending. Cinematography of the film is neat. Some of the dialogues are nice (especially Telangana Vastunda – Vizag sim ki roaming padutunda dialogue). The producer has taken lot of care in the postproduction and it shows up on the screen.

Final Analysis:

Indumathi is a kind of film that is made with the purpose of entertainment by leaving the basic plot aside. Hence if you look for entertainment, Indumathi might satisfy you. If you look from a critic’s point of view, you will get disturbed because the plot is diluted to create entertainment. You will get slightly disappointed with ‘Indumathi’ if you had already seen ‘psycho’ (1960). There could be some entertainment value for the others.
